WTF Podcast

Yeah, Marc Maron's sitting down with Robin Williams for an hour. No big deal. So what do you talk about with an international comedy superstar? How about alcoholism, cocaine, divorce, joke stealing, heart surgery, fame, Richard Pryor, jealousy, and Twitter? Yeah. That should do it.

You can get the podcast on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast site. Or use this direct link to the mp3-file (17,1 Mb) or iTunes Store (the podcast is free).

Robin in Dolphins PSA

Dolphins

Back in 1994 Robin made a documentary about Dolphins (in the wild with Dolphins) and he expressed his love for these animals many, many times. Therefore it doesn't come as a suprise when it was announced Robin would join the following campaign:

Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Jason Mraz, Hayden Panettiere, Paul Rudd, Robin Williams and many more celebrities appear in a new public service announcement from the creators of Oscar-winning documentary "The Cove." The stars have come together in an effort to raise awareness about the brutal slaughter of dolphins off the coast of Japan.

"The Cove" producer Fisher Stevens reached out to friends like Panettiere, who appears in the film, and to other famous fans of the movie. In honor of Earth Day, the stars are asking you to go to TakePart.com to learn how to write leaders like President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Japanese authorities and ask for the slaughter practices to be changed.

Panettiere has spent some of her recent time off from "Heroes" in the fishing village of Taiji, Japan, to peacefully discuss income options that don't involve animal cruelty. It was a risky trip, considering the last time she visited Taiji, a warrant was issued for her arrest when she interfered with a hunt by paddling out into the ocean and bodily protecting the dolphins.

Marc Maron Delves Into the Real Robin

with marc Maron

source: Punchline Magazine
Since Marc Maron launched his popular podcast WTF, he's proven himself a deft interviewer -- someone who's able to welcome comedians (and the occasional non comedian) to his garage -- the site of most of his episodes -- or his guest's hotel or in a parking and anywhere in between, and make them feel comfortable enough so that the result is as compelling a conversation you could hear on anywhere.

He's admittedly pathologically narcissistic, but it's obvious he's just as interested in the way others process life and deal with emotions as he is with his own idiosyncrasies.

On Monday, Maron will release a pretty special episode of WTF, featuring comedy legend Robin Williams. If you follow stand-up comedy even a little, you'll know that Williams has been dealing with some major life situations the past few years: a divorce from his wife of 20 years, alcohol rehab after two decades of sobriety and heart surgery (aortic valve replacement). Maron managed to land an hour long interview with the man.

"I had about one degree of separation with Robin Williams," Maron tells Punchline Magazine. "We'd hung out a couple of times but we weren't tight. I was taking a trip up to his neck of the woods. I thought I would try to track him down. So I did and he agreed to an interview."

Maron continues: "No matter what your opinions may be of him he was, and might still be, one of the biggest comedy stars in the world. I was nervous because I didn't want to get caught up in the Williams riff cyclone and be blown out without getting a real interview-- a genuine conversation with him. We sat down for about an hour and he stayed still and focused and open. This is a rare chat with a huge star."

On the site of Punchline Magazine there're 3 exclusive clips. The full interview will be available on monday April 26th, on iTunes or WTFpods.com

Robin facilitating the Lauren Hutton Tribute

Lauren Hutton

By LORI A. CARTER | THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
Of all the roles Lauren Hutton has played in her life -- supermodel, actress, business owner -- she prefers to be known for her "real life."

"That's learning," she said Saturday night after accepting an award honoring her four-decade film career. "How are we different, what makes us different and most importantly, what are the differences between the only two races - men and women."

Hutton was saluted with the Spotlight Award at the 13th annual Sonoma International Film Festival, which concludes today.

A model since her early 20s, the famously gap-toothed Hutton, 66, accepted the award from her friend, comedian Robin Williams, himself an award-winning actor and a Sonoma Valley resident.

Before an overflow audience at the Sebastiani Theatre, Williams interviewed Hutton about her film career, modeling, her Southern upbringing, motorcycling and her deep sea diving adventures.

In her latest film, "The Joneses" -- her first movie in 20 years -- Hutton plays a corporate executive at a marketing company. Demi Moore and David Duchovny star as an ostensibly perfect couple whom she assigns to stealthily promote products in their everyday lives.

The film, which will screen twice today to wrap up the festival, opens to wide release on April 30.

At one point during the ceremony, tie-dye wearing peace activist Wavy Gravy tossed his red clown nose onto the stage, which Hutton promptly put on.

"She's beautiful, look at her - totally natural, even wearing a...clown nose," Williams quipped in his rapid-fire, stream-of-consciousness delivery. "This is a tribute, let Scorsese do this."

Weapons on iTunes

In the week ending April 5th, an unusual, but interesting thing happened. Robin's comedy album placed #7 of best selling albums on iTunes that week. Comedy albums usually don't attract such a big audience, so with Weapons of Self Destruction making it this big, it's definitely worth a mention here.

iTunes' top 10 selling albums of the week ending April 5, 2010:

1. Raymond v Raymond - Usher
2. New Amerykah Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh - Erykah Badu
3. My World 2.0 - Justin Bieber
4. Wu Tang Presents... Wu-Massacre - Raekwon, Method Man, Ghostface Killah
5. Need You Now - Lady Antebellum
6. The Fame Monster - Lady GaGa
7. Weapons of Self Destruction - Robin Williams
8. Someday - Rob Thomas
9. Freight Train - Alan Jackson
10. The Last Song (Original Soundtrack) - Various Artists

Weapons Dropped on #59 on the Billboard Charts

Weapons on Billboard Chart

source: billboard.com
"I had open heart surgery. I had a blown valve ... which makes me sound like a Chevrolet. They started offering me choices about what kinds of valves I could get. I thought, maybe I can get the new Apple iHeart. That would be great. It comes with 20,000 emotions!"

With inimitable musings such as that, Robin Williams ends an almost 27-year drought from the Billboard 200, as "Weapons of Self Destruction" blasts in at No. 59. The set also starts at No. 1 on Comedy Albums.

The legendary actor/comedian charted twice before on the Billboard 200. "Reality...What a Concept" reached No. 10 in 1979, and "Throbbing Python of Love" peaked at No. 119 in 1983.

Not that Williams has been idle since his last chart appearance. He took home two Grammy Awards in 1988 and 1989 and won the 1997 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his revered role as Sean Maguire in the Matt Damon blockbuster "Good Will Hunting."

Since its launch in September 2008, Williams' 90-date "Weapons of Self Destruction" tour played to 300,000 fans in 65 cities across the U.S., the U.K. and Canada.

Amazing What Comedy Can Do: Australia vs Alabama

Alabama vs Australia vs Robin

With one jokey insult told on a late-night TV show, Robin Williams has set off an international war of words between Australia and ... Alabama? Speaking on 'The Late Show With David Letterman' on Tuesday, Williams zinged that the people down under are "basically English rednecks."

Oh no he didn't, y'all!

That dig in turn annoyed the bejeezus out of Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, who promptly released a statement defending his state. "I'm not sure if Prime Minister Rudd has ever been to Alabama," he said. "If he has, he would know that Alabamians are decent, hard working, creative people."

Still, Williams, aware that he may have ticked off some of his Aussie fans, called into a popular radio show there on Thursday to laugh off the controversy.

"Nice comeback, way to go K-Rudd," Williams said of the PM's Alabama-dissing response to his joke. "I was just there for two weeks. Every time I've been in Australia it's been wonderful. I love it down there."

He went on to apologize to Rudd and offered that perhaps he should "modify my terminology and say 'English good old boy'" next time he tells the joke, which he says he told dozens of time in Australia without objection.

"Please let me come back to Australia without a cavity search," he begged. "And if not, I'd love to go to a strip club with you in New York."

Rudd admitted during his campaign to become Prime Minister a few years ago that he had visited a "gentlemen's club" in Manhattan back in 2003. He said he didn't remember much about the night because he "had too much to drink."
